Biography

An American cognitive scientist and co-founder of the MIT AI Laboratory. With Seymour Papert he published an analysis of perceptrons demonstrating what single-layer networks provably cannot compute, and he later developed frame-based theories of knowledge representation.

Impact

The perceptron analysis is often blamed for the decline in neural network research during the 1970s. Its actual content was narrower: it established what a single layer cannot do, which is precisely the limitation multilayer networks and backpropagation later overcame.
